Fire Regulations & Compliance
The single biggest difference between a domestic bed and a contract bed is fire safety. Furniture used in hotels, care homes, student accommodation and other commercial settings must meet stricter standards than furniture sold for the home — and getting it wrong can invalidate your insurance and carry legal consequences. Every bed and mattress DCF supplies meets the appropriate standard for its setting, as standard.
Crib 5 refers to a fire-resistance test (Ignition Source 5) that furniture must pass for use in higher-risk commercial and institutional environments. It tests how a mattress or bed base resists a more severe ignition source than the domestic equivalent — the level required for most hotels, care homes, student halls and public accommodation.
BS 7177 is the British Standard that classifies the fire resistance of mattresses, divans and bed bases by hazard level — Low, Medium, High and Very High. Medium hazard (which corresponds to Source 5 / Crib 5) is the level typically required for hotels, universities and care premises. Higher-hazard settings may require a higher classification.
